The powerful Mediterranean storm Daniel caused severe flooding in Libya over the weekend. The storm hit the cities of Benghazi, Susa, Bayda, and al-Marj, but the destruction appeared greatest in the port city of Derna where two dams burst.   The collapse of two dams under the pressure of flooding sent water rushing towards Derna, and engulfed the area, destroying roads and bridges, causing catastrophic damage.   The floods had swept away entire neighborhoods in Derna, leaving thousands of residents missing, and an estimated 3,000 people are feared dead. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/9/12/death-toll-in-libya-floods-reaches-3000-benghazi-administration Currently, Derna is still largely cut off as road access has not yet been secured, and internet and power are off in the city. In the evening on Friday, September 9th, a strong Magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Morocco at a shallow depth of 18.5 km.  This is the most powerful quake to hit the country in more than 60 years, Its epicenter was located in the High Atlas mountain range, about 72 kilometers (44.7 miles) southwest of Marrakech, a city of about 840,000 people. The worst destruction has been in isolated mountain areas, which are difficult to access. Residents have described whole villages suffering damage and rescuers unable to retrieve bodies from rubble. Emergency workers were deployed to affected regions, despite some roads being damaged or blocked by debris. Some remote villages on the foothills of the mountain have been hard to access. Hurricane Hilary is currently a Category 4 hurricane off Mexico’s Pacific coast and could bring heavy rain to the southwestern US by the weekend. https://www.gdacs.org/report.aspx?eventid=1000993&episodeid=9&eventtype=TC Hurricane Hilary had sustained winds near 220 km/h (140 mph) at midnight and was expected to continue its rapid intensification on Friday morning. There is a possibility that it would start to weaken on Saturday. Tropical storm conditions could begin affecting the Baja California peninsula late on Friday. Hilary’s projected path threatens to make landfall in the middle of the peninsula by Sunday, or it may stay just offshore while heading for southern California. The area potentially affected by heavy rainfall could stretch from Bakersfield, California, to Yuma, Arizona, as well as some parts of southern Nevada. In early August 2023, a series of severe wildfires broke out on Maui Island, Hawaii. In particular, the wildfires hit the area of Lahaina City and Kula City.
